Holster Selection

I am asked a lot about holsters.  Specifically what is the best holster.  That question is a difficult one to answer if not impossible.  I do not believe that there is one holster out there that is the best for all circumstances.  Your weapon, carry location, and mission will dictate what is the best holster for the job.  With that said, I think for most concealed carry or plain clothes carry that there is one type of holster that is pretty high on the priority list.  That holster is one that is made from Kydex (plastic).

I have become a big fan of Kydex holsters over the last few years.  I use a Kydex holster exclusively when I am wearing range attire or plain clothes out in public.  I like the Kydex holsters because they are made to fit your gun and the retention is pretty good for a friction retention style holster.  If the retention gets a little loose just get out the old hair dryer, heat the holster and set the retention at what feels right for you.

Kydex holsters are easy to conceal because they fit close to the body on OWB style holsters. For IWB style holsters they are not too thick and bulky to be uncomfortable.  When you draw your weapon they do not collapse and allow for you to safely re-holster your weapon.

Holster selection is a very personal thing but the listed reasons above is why I prefer Kydex holsters over leather holsters.  In the end it really comes down to what you are comfortable with and have confidence in.  If you choose to go the Kydex route there are at ton of companies that make quality holsters.  A few that I have used are Raven Concealment, and DSG Arms Alpha holsters.
